FRIDAY: Practice Day

You can train for something until you’re blue in the face, but there’s nothing quite like the real thing. By that, I mean the 60-degree cockpit heat that I experienced during practice in my FW30 today. It was stifling.

In January I travelled here with my trainer Nick Harris and he made me train outside in my overalls. It was immensely tough because I’d never experienced heat and humidity like it, and it gave me a good insight into how the body reacts in such extreme conditions.

When I landed in Kuala Lumpur earlier this week, Nick made me play tennis outside wearing a sweat top, two shirts and a coat. Again, it was really tough, but none of this prepared me for my first laps around Sepang in 75 percent humidity and 32-degree heat.

When you’re in the car you sweat like you’ve never sweated before and the hot air feels very claustrophobic. It’s like trying to run a marathon while taking a hot shower. Sunday’s race is going to be a tough one...
